What's New in Traffic Safety

New York State Bans Texting While Driving

New York lawmakers passed a bill that prohibits all drivers from using portable electronic devices.
The law prohibits all drivers from using portable electronic devices, such as cell phones and smart phones, to send text messages or e-mails while driving. The penalty for a violation of this law shall be a fine of up to $150. It is a secondary law, which means in order for a person to be ticketed for the offense, the driver must have committed a primary enforcement offense such as speeding, disobeying a traffic signal or other violation. This law, when it takes effect, will replace laws passed by other jurisdictions in NYS. This law takes effect on November 1, 2009.

Child Passenger Safety

NEW YORK STATE'S "NEW" CHILD RESTRAINT LAW
Child Passenger Restraints Are Not An Option, They Are The Law!

All children must be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle, until they reach their 8th birthday. An appropriate child restraint system is one that meets the child's size and weight recommended by the manufacturer. The safety belt in your vehicle is not designed for children. A booster seat raises your child up so that the safety belt fits your child correctly and provides better protection.

2010 “Save Your Friend's Life Over the Airwaves” Contest

The New York State Association of Traffic Safety Boards will be conducting the sixth annual statewide public service announcement (PSA) “Save Your Friend’s Life Over the Airwaves” contest.  The contest is conducted to increase teen awareness of the leading risk factors associated with motor vehicle crashes and injuries and identify radio/video messages to encourage their peers to travel safely.

High school students/student groups can enter the contest by submitting an entry form, signed release form and a 30 second PSA (radio or video format) addressing one or more of the following risk factors: drowsy driving, speeding, safety belt use, impaired driving and distracted driving.  One or more winners will be selected for each topic area.  Each winner will receive a monetary award, state and local recognition. The winning PSA will be aired on radio stations and used in community-based teen driving safety campaigns to promote teen driving safety throughout the state.  All entries must be postmarked by March 17, 2010.

All contest details can be found on the following pdf documents.  Be sure to follow all contest rules and guidelines!
